In a significant development, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra has expressed alarm over the alleged deletion of 9.8 lakh voters from the electoral rolls in Odisha amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. In a detailed letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Patra underscored the necessity for a thorough inquiry before any deletions are finalized.

Patra pointed out that while accurate electoral rolls are crucial to electoral integrity, the proposed deletions' magnitude and procedural irregularities have raised serious concerns. He highlighted a preliminary verification phase that identified these voters for potential deletion, amidst substantial complaints received by Odisha's Chief Electoral Officer.

In his communication, Patra cited credible reports indicating lapses in mandatory field verification by Booth Level Officers, leading to potential wrongful disenfranchisement. He called for a state-wide re-verification and full public transparency of the deletion data, also urging the Election Commission to enhance grievance redressal systems and conduct an independent audit in areas with reported discrepancies.
