India-Bhutan Customs Collaboration: Tackling Smuggling and Streamlining Trade

The seventh India–Bhutan Joint Group of Customs meeting kicked off in Munnar on Monday, according to officials. The pivotal two-day event, set against the backdrop of the recent 'Operation Numkhor' vehicle smuggling bust, highlights the significance of customs cooperation between the two nations.

A 10-member delegation from Bhutan's customs is part of the annual collaborative effort aimed at addressing bilateral trade and customs challenges. Key discussions include coordinated border management and the digitization of customs processes, emphasizing seamless cross-border trade under the Agreement on Trade, Commerce and Transit.

As customs vigilance led to arrests and seizures linked to high-end vehicle smuggling, the meeting serves as a platform to share findings and reinforce partnership efforts. The case underscores the importance of ongoing coordination to improve trade facilitation and border infrastructure.
