Sunny Kumar, a 20-year-old resident of Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has been detained by police on charges of fraudulently posing as a digital payment platform employee to scam shopkeepers in East Delhi. He was caught following a detailed technical and financial investigation.
The scheme came to the forefront when Rishipal Singh of New Ashok Nagar lodged a complaint on April 8. Singh reported that a man identifying himself as a representative of a digital payment service arrived at his shop, ostensibly to examine a defective payment sound box. During the visit, the conman reportedly earned Singh's confidence, took his phone, and replaced the SIM card, conducting unauthorized transactions amounting to Rs 13,500.
An FIR was lodged on April 15, prompting a police probe. Their analysis revealed that the defrauded money was deposited into a specific bank account. Through KYC data and technical surveillance, officers tracked down the identity of the accused, Kumar, who used prior knowledge from working with a digital payment firm to exploit small entrepreneurs. Police are continuing their investigation into the wider implications of this scheme.
