Extradition of Financial Leader Highlights Global Clampdown on Scams
Former Huione Pay chairman Li Xiong has been extradited from Cambodia to China over allegations of laundering money for criminal organisations. This move underscores Cambodia's efforts to tackle scam operations. Li is tied to businessman Chen Zhi, whose syndicate is accused of running a transnational criminal empire.
In a significant development, Li Xiong, a former leader at a Cambodian financial entity, has been extradited to China on charges of money laundering tied to criminal organisations, as announced by the Cambodian authorities on Wednesday. The move is part of Cambodia's intensified effort to dismantle scam operations.
Li, who held the position of chairman at Huione Pay, is associated with Chen Zhi's criminal syndicate, according to CCTV. Chen, extradited earlier in January, remains detained in China. The Prince Group, linked to Chen, has faced international sanctions due to its alleged involvement in extensive online investment scams and cyber heists.
An anonymous spokesperson from Prince Group refuted claims connecting Li Xiong to their operations, stressing a lack of evidence for such assertions. Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury reports that Huione Group allegedly laundered $4 billion. Chinese cooperation with Cambodia is ongoing to combat cross-border fraud.
