Ukraine Challenges Russian Athletes' 'Neutral' Status Amid Military Links
Ukraine's sports authorities are urging the IOC to reassess the neutral status of Russian athletes competing in upcoming Olympic events, alleging some have military ties. This follows evidence supplied by Ukrainian officials of violations of IOC guidelines, particularly in sports climbing and its governing federation.
In a bold move, Ukraine's sports authorities have called on the International Olympic Committee to reevaluate the 'neutral' status of Russian athletes slated to compete in future Games, accusing them of having connections to military activities and events breaching Olympic sanctions.
The Ukrainian Sports Minister and National Olympic Committee head have provided evidence to suggest that some athletes are defying IOC rules established in 2023, which prohibited ties to the military or backing the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The appeal centers on systematic violations in sports climbing and claims certain athletes flew under the radar with military links, Moscow's aggressive policies, and participation in unauthorized competitions. Ukraine urges the IOC and relevant federations to investigate and take action against those involved.
