India Launches Digital Self-Enumeration for Census 2027

The Indian government has initiated its first digital self-enumeration process as part of Census 2027, marking a significant milestone in the country's census history. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led by example, participating in this pioneering exercise which allows citizens to self-submit demographic information online.

This digital approach, beginning in eight states and territories, aims to increase participation and ensure accurate data collection. The self-enumeration exercise comes ahead of the traditional door-to-door surveys starting in April. Citizens are encouraged to provide their data via a specialized web portal, paving the way for a more efficient and inclusive census process.

Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the census's critical role in accelerating development and effective resource allocation across India. The shift to a digital format is expected to streamline operations, bringing a modern touch to the decadal exercise, which had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
