The strategic enhancement of Meghalaya's disaster management capabilities took a significant leap forward on Wednesday. The state government formed two new battalions of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to tackle natural calamities more efficiently.
Each battalion, consisting of 354 personnel, increases the total SDRF strength to 708. One battalion will operate in the Garo Hills, whereas the other will cover Shillong and the Jaintia Hills, officials revealed. The battalions were officially raised during a ceremony at the Civil Defence and Home Guards Complex in Mawdiangdiang, attended by Civil Defence and Home Guards Minister Brenning A Sangma, who raised the unit flag.
This innovative approach consists of integrating the Border Wing Home Guards Battalion, which is not a common practice in many states, underscoring administrative ingenuity. Furthermore, modern equipment and specialized training will prepare these units to respond adeptly to challenges posed by Meghalaya's unique geography and climate.
