The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, has stirred significant debate in India's Parliament, receiving mixed reactions after President Draupadi Murmu's approval. The bill has been criticized for excluding gay and lesbian individuals from its protection, sparking calls for it to be sent to a standing committee for further deliberation.
The proposed legislation seeks to clearly define 'transgender', restricting the scope to exclude those identifying with different sexual orientations. Advocates argue that the bill might marginalize certain communities further, while the government contends it focuses on protecting people facing discrimination based on biological factors.
Despite opposition pressure, the bill passed in the Rajya Sabha without amendments, underscoring the government's commitment to address discrimination faced by transgender persons. While the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Virendra Kumar, emphasized the bill's intent to integrate marginalized communities, many MPs are urging a review by a select committee to ensure comprehensive and inclusive legislation.
