Tragedy Strikes: Veterinary Doctor Fatally Attacked by Hippo at Zoo
A veterinary doctor named Dr. Sameeksha Reddy was fatally injured by a hippopotamus while attending to a wild animal at the Tavarekoppa Lion and Safari Zoo in Shivamogga. She succumbed to her injuries hours later. Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre announced compensation for the family and called for an inquiry.

In a tragic incident at the Tavarekoppa Lion and Safari Zoo in Shivamogga, a veterinary doctor was fatally attacked by a hippopotamus. Dr. Sameeksha Reddy, 26, had recently joined the zoo on a contract basis and was providing medical care when the attack occurred.
The attack happened around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday. Despite being rushed to a hospital, Reddy succumbed to her injuries by 6:30 a.m. on Friday. Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre expressed his condolences, emphasizing the preciousness of every life and promising government support to the family.
Minister Khandre has mandated an inquiry led by senior veterinarians and forest officials to look into the circumstances of the incident. Zoos statewide are urged to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures when dealing with wild animals to prevent future tragedies.
