Congress Criticizes Government Over Inadequate Pension Plans

The Congress party escalated its critique against the Indian government on Wednesday after a Parliamentary committee advocated for an urgent reassessment of the Rs 1,000 monthly pension under the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995. They demanded decisive action to address what they view as outdated pension policies.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, castigated the Modi administration's handling of social security, alleging a deliberate diminishment of crucial schemes over the past 12 years. He emphasized the immediate impact of rising inflation on pensioners, deeming the current pension provision inadequate.

Echoing Ramesh's sentiment, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour, Textiles, and Skill Development pointed out that the stagnancy of the Rs 1000 pension fails to meet present-day financial requirements. They urged for a revision, aligning with pensioners' demands for a sustainable Rs 7,500 monthly pension to cope with inflationary pressures.
