The Punjab Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Tuesday as it passed a resolution against Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira over offensive remarks about women celebrating the Mukh Mantri Mahila Samman Yojna. The scheme provides Rs 1,000 monthly to eligible women beneficiaries.
Four female AAP MLAs, including Amandeep Kaur Arora and Inderjit Kaur Mann, protested in the House, demanding that Khaira apologize for his controversial social media comments. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa were actively involved in the debate, with the Assembly being adjourned due to the uproar.
After reconvening, AAP MLA Saravjit Kaur Manuke moved a condemnation motion, seconded by Cheema, despite Congress MLAs' requests to allow Khaira to explain himself. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains highlighted the comments' feudal mindset, while Congress MLA Aruna Chaudhary advocated for Khaira's right to address the Assembly before proceedings against him continued.
