Prime Minister Mark Carney aims to strengthen economic ties with China amidst U.S. tariff impacts. The Canadian industry ministry initially ordered TikTok's business dissolution in Canada in November 2024 due to security concerns. However, a federal court overturned that order in January.
TikTok must ensure enhanced security for Canadian users' personal information and implement safeguards for minors. An independent monitor will oversee data access controls. This move arrives as global scrutiny of TikTok's Chinese ownership continues, with fears over data exploitation.
