The Supreme Court of India has taken a firm stand against the prevalent culture of distributing freebies, expressing concerns over its negative impact on the nation's economic development. In a hearing on Thursday, the court addressed a plea by the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd, which proposed offering free electricity to all consumers, regardless of their financial status.
Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, pointed out that most states in India are running revenue deficits while continuing to provide such freebies. They argued that this free distribution hampers economic growth and that states should instead focus on creating job opportunities to foster development.
Issuing a notice to the Centre, the court questioned the rationale behind the DMK government-led power firm's decision to pursue free electricity soon after a tariff notification. The bench emphasized the need for distinguishing between those who can and cannot afford such services, warning against policies that might amount to appeasement rather than genuine welfare measures.
