Los Angeles Lakers center Deandre Ayton was detained at Lynden Pindling International Airport in the Bahamas on Tuesday for possessing a small amount of marijuana, sources revealed to Reuters.
Ayton, born in the Bahamas, was briefly held and later released, according to the sources. The arrest occurred as the basketball player was preparing to leave the island nation. Despite efforts to contact them, the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Lakers have yet to comment on the situation.
The Bahamas government has initiated legalization of marijuana for medical and religious purposes, yet it remains otherwise illegal. Ayton, previously playing for the Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers, joined the Lakers last summer and missed his second consecutive game last Thursday.
