US Capitol Police in Washington, D.C., swiftly detained an armed 18-year-old suspect near the Capitol Building on Tuesday. The individual, who was attired in tactical gear, ran from his Mercedes SUV towards the Capitol's west side, brandishing a loaded shotgun. Police officers acted promptly to intercept him, ordering him to the ground.
During a press conference, Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan outlined that the suspect also had a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask within his vehicle, and carried additional shotgun rounds. Although Congress was not in session at the time of the incident, Sullivan expressed that the suspect's intentions were still being scrutinized, including whether any Congress members were potential targets.
Highlighting the critical role of preparedness, Sullivan emphasized that recent active shooter drills had been conducted in the vicinity. He called for public assistance, requesting any additional video footage of the incident to aid in the investigation. 'Who knows what would have happened if we wouldn’t have officers standing here?' Sullivan remarked.
