The government announced on Tuesday that the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) had successfully facilitated refunds amounting to Rs 52 crore across 31 sectors by resolving 79,521 consumer grievances as of January. These refunds were secured at the pre-litigation stage, enabling consumers to receive timely relief without resorting to Consumer Commissions.
The NCH, a flagship initiative of the Consumer Affairs Ministry, plays a critical role in providing effective and accessible grievance redressal under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Operating through a convergence model, grievances are digitally forwarded to companies for resolution within set timelines, and the process is continuously monitored with consumer feedback.
The e-commerce sector recorded the highest number of grievances, with 47,743 complaints leading to over Rs 36 crore in refunds. The travel and tourism sector followed, with refunds exceeding Rs 4 crore. The Helpline’s extensive reach, spanning both metropolitan and remote regions, underscores its role as a pan-India consumer grievance platform.
