Delhi High Court Highlights Risks of Rising Online Fraud and SIM Card Misuse

The Delhi High Court has emphasized the growing threat posed by online fraud and misuse of SIM cards, highlighting the serious risks involved. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma acknowledged the rise in offences linked to deceptive messaging for financial gain, noting a concerning impact on public trust and digital safety.

In a recent ruling, the court denied anticipatory bail to two persons identified as the 'principal architects' of a massive scheme involving fraudulent SIM card acquisition. The duo was linked to a company accused of misusing telecom infrastructure for cyber-crime activities aimed at inducing financial loss through fake loan and credit-related messages.

With the investigation still in its early stages, the court stressed the necessity of custodial interrogation to fully reveal the conspiracy. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) opposed the bail pleas, arguing that the involved SIM cards were obtained by falsifying user details in a manner that gravely undermines digital security.
