In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a stenographer from Chennai's Income Tax Department for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh. The arrest was made after the agency executed a sting operation to catch the official red-handed.
The accused had reportedly demanded a bribe equating to 10% of a taxpayer's outstanding dues of Rs 19 lakh from the assessment year of 2020-2021. The illegal transaction was intercepted, and the bribe amount was seized during the operation, according to a CBI statement released on Tuesday.
Additional searches at the suspect's residence unearthed incriminating documents, further adding to the gravity of the case. The accused has been presented in court and remains in judicial custody as investigations continue, said the CBI.
