In a controversial move, former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee has been appointed to two significant committees of the West Bengal assembly, just before the budget session. Chatterjee, an MLA from Behala Paschim, was taken into these roles despite his involvement in a major employment scam.
Chatterjee's ministerial duties were revoked in July 2022 following his arrest due to a recruitment scam, with significant amounts of cash found at related properties. Despite his controversial past, the assembly's regulations require that every elected member participate in at least two committees, with Speaker Biman Banerjee upholding this protocol in Chatterjee's case.
Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari expressed concerns that Chatterjee's inclusion in these committees could represent the TMC's lack of commitment to corruption eradication. The appointments raise questions about the party's stance and transparency as the budget session approaches.
