The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), India's border-guarding force, has enhanced its surveillance capabilities by incorporating advanced equipment, including UAVs, micro UAVs, and automatic face and number-plate recognition systems. This strategic move was announced to the Lok Sabha as part of a broader modernization effort.
Covering a formidable length of 2,400 kilometers along the borders with Nepal and Bhutan, the SSB is receiving substantial investments. Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, reported that from the fiscal year 2015-16 to 2025-26, the SSB has been allocated Rs 5,001.63 crore, of which Rs 4,775.11 crore has already been expended.
The modernization initiative aims to upgrade all the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), enhancing their efficiency with modern weaponry, communication tools, and surveillance systems. Despite these developments, a timeline for specific targets on strengthening the SSB's capacities remains unspecified, reflecting the continuous nature of the modernization process.
