Jose Gonzalo Sanchez, the second-in-command of Colombia's largest criminal organization, Clan del Golfo, died in a boat accident while promoting peace talks. The incident occurred on the Esmeralda River in the Cordoba region according to both the illegal group and government sources.
The Office of the High Commissioner for Peace expressed hope that Sanchez's untimely death would not hinder ongoing discussions with the criminal group. Designated a terrorist organization by the U.S., Clan del Golfo is involved in peace negotiations with Colombia's government under President Gustavo Petro.
Despite setbacks, the administration remains dedicated to achieving peace after six decades of armed conflict within the nation.
