Revival of the 'Darbar Move': A Tradition Beyond Fiscal Measures

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the revival of the historical 'Darbar Move' on Monday, a decision that underscores the importance of tradition and regional unity over financial concerns.

The tradition, which involves relocating government offices between Srinagar and Jammu seasonally, resumed as offices began operating in Jammu, the winter capital. This practice was paused by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in 2021 citing cost-saving measures.

Critics, including Jammu's business community, voiced their opposition to the halt due to its economic impacts. Abdullah delivered on his election promise by reinstating the tradition, highlighting its role in fostering unity between Jammu and Kashmir.
