The Jammu and Kashmir government recently tabled a bill in the assembly proposing to extend the maximum age limit for the State Election Commissioner (SEC) from 65 to 70 years.

This amendment aims to align with similar provisions in Uttar Pradesh and provide greater flexibility under certain circumstances. The bill amends the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989. According to the current draft, the SEC can hold office for five years or until turning 70, whichever comes first.

Additionally, another bill was introduced to modify the Cooperative Societies Act. This change will allow the Special Tribunal to assume the duties and powers of the Cooperative Appellate Tribunal. The amendment seeks to omit section 157 of the Act, removing the statutory requirement to establish more Tribunals.
