In a prompt and compassionate response to the widespread devastation caused by heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides during the ongoing southwest monsoon, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, has approved an advance release of ₹20 crore as the second installment of the Central share from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for the financial year 2025–26 to the State of Nagaland.

The financial support aims to assist the Nagaland Government in providing immediate relief measures to citizens severely affected by the extreme weather conditions. The funds will help restore critical infrastructure, rehabilitate affected communities, and ensure timely assistance to those in distress across the state's flood-hit districts.

Centre's Commitment to Disaster Relief and Mitigation

The Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the strategic guidance of Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, continues to uphold its commitment to supporting states during natural disasters. The Centre has consistently prioritized rapid financial, technical, and logistic support to minimize loss of life and property and to expedite recovery efforts.

In the current financial year (2025–26) alone, the Central Government has disbursed substantial funds to states under various disaster relief and mitigation mechanisms:

  • ₹15,554 crore released to 27 States under the SDRF,

  • ₹2,267.44 crore provided to 15 States under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF),

  • ₹4,571.30 crore allocated from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) to 21 States, and

  • ₹372.09 crore released from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) to 9 States.

This cumulative disbursement reflects the Centre's proactive approach in ensuring liquidity for state governments to respond effectively to disaster situations without delays.

Swift Action and On-Ground Support

Beyond financial assistance, the Central Government has extended comprehensive logistical and operational aid to all flood and landslide-affected states. This includes:

  • Deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams for rescue and relief operations,

  • Army units assisting in remote and inaccessible terrains, and

  • Indian Air Force support for aerial rescue, evacuation, and delivery of essential supplies.

During the ongoing monsoon season, the NDRF achieved a record-high deployment of 199 teams across 30 States and Union Territories, marking the largest nationwide mobilization of disaster response personnel in recent years. This extensive deployment ensured round-the-clock assistance in states impacted by cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides.

Focus on Preparedness and Resilience

The Home Ministry's recent initiatives go beyond short-term relief. With climate-induced disasters becoming more frequent and severe, the focus is increasingly on long-term disaster preparedness and resilience building.

Under the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the government is:

  • Encouraging state-level disaster mitigation planning through SDMF allocations,

  • Enhancing forecasting and early warning systems with real-time data sharing,

  • Promoting community-based disaster risk reduction programmes, and

  • Strengthening coordination between central and state agencies for quicker response.

Ensuring Relief to the Last Mile

The latest release of ₹20 crore to Nagaland underscores the Union Government's "whole-of-government" approach toward managing natural calamities. The fund will enable the Nagaland administration to:

  • Provide immediate cash assistance and relief kits to affected families,

  • Repair damaged homes, bridges, and public infrastructure,

  • Restore communication and transportation networks, and

  • Implement rehabilitation and resettlement measures for displaced communities.

This proactive financial support ensures that even geographically challenging and remote regions like Nagaland are not left behind in the national disaster response framework.

Amit Shah's Leadership in Strengthening Disaster Response

Under Shri Amit Shah's leadership, the Ministry of Home Affairs has placed strong emphasis on capacity building, preparedness, and technological modernization of India's disaster management systems. The Ministry has prioritized coordination among agencies, rapid fund release, and the creation of specialized task forces to handle multi-hazard emergencies.

Through initiatives like the revamp of NDRF training, expansion of regional response centers, and adoption of digital tracking systems for disaster relief distribution, India has significantly enhanced its ability to respond swiftly to natural disasters.

The advance release of ₹20 crore to Nagaland exemplifies the Government of India's ongoing commitment to timely disaster relief, cooperative federalism, and resilience-building. The Ministry's coordinated approach — blending financial assistance, field deployment, and policy reform — continues to strengthen India's disaster response ecosystem, ensuring that relief reaches every affected citizen promptly and effectively.
