Nigerian Army Repels Insurgent Attacks Amid Rising Violence
Islamist insurgents used armed drones and heavy firepower in coordinated attacks on military positions in Northeastern Nigeria but were repelled by the Nigerian army. The attacks led to casualties and the destruction of military assets. Nigeria continues to face severe security challenges from insurgents and other violent groups.
In a series of daring attacks, Islamist insurgents targeted military positions across four districts in Northeastern Nigeria using armed drones and heavy firepower, setting ablaze a military barracks before troops repelled their assault, according to a statement from a Nigerian army spokesperson.
The coordinated attacks, which occurred between midnight and 0300 GMT, focused on three military positions in Borno State and another in neighboring Yobe State. Military spokesperson Sani Uba reported injuries among troops and significant damage inflicted by drones and RPG fire, specifically in Mafa and Dikwa.
Despite the initial breach, Nigerian forces killed 50 of the attackers and recovered their ammunition. The insurgency, which has plagued Nigeria for over 15 years causing massive displacement and fatalities, remains a critical issue, with at least 333 attacks recorded this year alone.
