President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, unveiled the bust of former President of India, Shri K. R. Narayanan, at Raj Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram, on October 23, 2025. The solemn ceremony was attended by former President Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Kerala Governor Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Bihar Governor Shri Arif Mohammed Khan, and other distinguished guests. The event marked a poignant tribute to one of India's most revered statesmen who rose from humble beginnings to occupy the nation's highest constitutional office.
A Tribute to Courage and Perseverance
In her address, President Murmu described Shri Narayanan's life as a powerful testament to courage, perseverance, and the transformative power of education. Born into a modest family in Kerala's Uzhavoor village, Shri Narayanan overcame social and economic barriers to excel academically and become a symbol of intellectual brilliance. He earned a first-class degree from the University of Travancore and went on to study at the London School of Economics, where he was mentored by the renowned political thinker Harold Laski.
President Murmu noted that Shri Narayanan's journey from a small village in Kerala to Rashtrapati Bhavan exemplifies the democratic promise of India — where education and determination can help one transcend every limitation.
A Distinguished Diplomat and Statesman
Before entering politics, Shri Narayanan served with distinction in the Indian Foreign Service. He represented India in countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, upholding the nation's values of peace, justice, and cooperation. Later, as Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and a Member of Parliament, he continued his dedication to public service and intellectual growth.
As India's 10th President (1997–2002), Shri Narayanan was known for his strong moral compass, independence, and unwavering commitment to the Constitution. He earned widespread respect for his thoughtful interventions and for upholding the dignity of the presidential office during challenging times.
Deep Roots in Kerala's Ethos
President Murmu emphasized Shri Narayanan's enduring connection to Kerala, his home state, which shaped his belief in education and social equity. "He drew inspiration from Kerala's emphasis on inclusivity and progress," she remarked. Even after ascending to the highest office, Shri Narayanan remained deeply connected to his roots, reflecting the humility and compassion that defined his public life.
Kerala Governor Arlekar and Bihar Governor Arif Mohammed Khan also lauded Shri Narayanan's contribution to India's democratic evolution and his advocacy for equality, particularly for marginalized communities.
Education as the Cornerstone of Progress
President Murmu highlighted Shri Narayanan's belief that education was not a privilege but a universal right. He viewed it as the cornerstone of individual empowerment and national development. His vision resonated with the idea that moral and civic values are fundamental to a society's progress.
"Shri Narayanan taught us that education should lead to human development — not just economic advancement," the President said. "He believed that a just and inclusive society can only be built when everyone has equal access to learning and opportunity."
A Legacy of Integrity and Inclusion
Reflecting on his enduring legacy, President Murmu said that Shri Narayanan's life continues to inspire generations of Indians to pursue excellence with integrity and compassion. His presidency was marked by moral courage and his deep sense of justice. She added that his memory should encourage the nation to strengthen its commitment to equality, integrity, and public service.
Former President Ram Nath Kovind echoed these sentiments, noting that Shri Narayanan's contributions transcended politics and embodied the spirit of the Indian Republic — democratic, secular, and inclusive.
Inspiring Future Generations
As the nation commemorates Shri Narayanan's contributions, the unveiling of his bust at Raj Bhavan stands as a lasting reminder of his ideals and values. President Murmu concluded her address by expressing hope that his life will continue to inspire the youth to build a more inclusive, compassionate, and just India — one where every citizen has the opportunity to rise, just as Shri Narayanan did, through education, perseverance, and integrity.
