Tensions Flare at German Gurdwara: Violent Clash Raises Security Alarm

A tumultuous incident unfolded at the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in North Rhine-Westphalia where a violent confrontation among more than 40 individuals demanded significant police intervention. The German newspaper Bild reported that specialized tactical units were mobilized to restore peace at the religious establishment. The clash, which erupted on Sunday, required massive security efforts following social media footage showing significant unrest within the gurdwara's premises. Witness accounts suggest that sharp weapons, including knives and kirpans, were used during the physical altercation.

In response to the crisis, approximately 100 law enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene. Bild further reported that a Special Task Force (SEK) from Dusseldorf, alongside a helicopter for aerial monitoring, was deployed after receiving reports of gunfire. The altercation reportedly intensified rapidly on Sunday afternoon. An eyewitness, aged 56, recounted to Bild that just before the scheduled prayer service, 'attackers used pepper spray, then one fired a pistol. I also saw knives.'

Preliminary investigations suggest the chaos stemmed from internal discord over the gurdwara's management and financial affairs, particularly the election of a new board and handling of community resources. The same eyewitness elaborated to Bild on the longstanding tensions, highlighting 'a dispute between former and current committee members, involving community funds. The sudden outbreak of violence caused considerable distress among the congregants. According to Neue Ruhr Zeitung (NRZ), several worshippers fled the building in a panic, with some exiting barefoot. Emergency medical personnel attended to the wounded, most of whom suffered head injuries. While police sealed off the area and searched for a potential gunman, no such individual was found, though one person has been detained.

Cartridge cases recovered from the site led to suspicions that a blank-firing weapon might have been used during the melee. However, according to Bild, the elusive firearm remains undiscovered. German authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the violent incident and its deeper causes. A police spokesperson informed NRZ that the enquiries are 'progressing in all directions'.
