Sagarmanthan 2025: Charting the Course for Sustainable Blue Growth

Hosted by the Observer Research Foundation and India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the event seeks to bolster international collaborations and foster innovation in the ocean economy.

The second edition of Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue kicked off in Mumbai, engaging international leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and scholars in critical discussions about the blue economy's future. This dialogue, running from October 27 to 29, is part of India Maritime Week, co-hosted by the Observer Research Foundation and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
India Maritime Week aims to strengthen global collaborations and boost investments in the ocean economy. The 2025 dialogue includes more than 250 participants from 65 countries, facilitated by partners including the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Gates Foundation, and DP World. These participants include ministers, former heads of state, senior officials, and academics.
Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized India's maritime ambitions, stating the country's dedication to harnessing oceanic potential through enhanced trade and connectivity. Notable figures like Norway's Marianne Sivertsen Naess and the Netherlands' Robert Tieman highlighted the necessity of international cooperation on sustainable ocean growth and challenges like climate change and digitalisation.
DP World's Rizwan Soomar addressed the future of logistics, emphasizing technology integration and sustainability. Meanwhile, ORF's Samir Saran discussed India's maritime economy as a pathway to global partnerships. With diverse thematic pillars guiding discussions, Sagarmanthan aims to influence policymaking, industry strategies, and academic perspectives globally.
