In a historic first, the Los Angeles City Hall City Council hosted a Diwali celebration on October 21, marking growing recognition of the Indian community in the region. Organized by Indian American City Councilmember Nithya Raman, the event featured traditional lamp lighting, cultural performances, and a Diwali Proclamation presented by city officials Nithya Raman, John Lee, and Tim McOsker. The occasion also welcomed new Consul General K J Srinivasa, highlighting strengthened ties between local authorities and the Indian diplomatic mission.
The event was notably graced by former Mayor Eric Garcetti, now US Ambassador to India, alongside influential figures from the Indian diaspora. Los Angeles City Hall was illuminated to honor Diwali, symbolizing unity and friendship between Indian and American communities. The Indian Consulate expressed appreciation for the city's gesture, celebrating the Indo-American community's vital contributions to the cultural tapestry. The public joined in the festivities, embracing the Festival of Lights in a spirit of togetherness.
Simultaneously, Diwali celebrations extended to the White House, where President Donald Trump participated in marking the festival. Trump extended warm greetings to Indians and Indian Americans, highlighting US-India relations in trade and peace. He praised PM Narendra Modi, lauding him as a "great friend" and emphasized the significance of Diwali in transcending darkness with light, knowledge, and goodwill. Senior Trump Administration officials and Indian-American business leaders joined the White House ceremony, showcasing the diaspora's engagement in bolstering US-India ties. This celebration underscores Diwali's cultural importance in the US, supported by a bipartisan resolution introduced in Congress recognizing its historical and spiritual significance.
