Global Effort Needed: Combating Under-Five Mortality in India and Nigeria
A new study published in PLOS One highlights that India and Nigeria accounted for one-third of global under-five deaths in 2023. Despite a global decrease in mortality rates, challenges remain as 58 countries struggle to meet the UN's Sustainable Development Goal by 2030.

India and Nigeria have been identified as significant contributors to the global under-five mortality rate, according to a recent study published in the journal PLOS One.
Researchers revealed the two countries accounted for one-third of the 4.78 million under-five deaths worldwide in 2023. Although the global mortality rate has seen a significant decline of 63% from 1990, many countries are still grappling with the challenge of reducing their under-five mortality rates to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goal of fewer than 25 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030.
While nations such as India, Nepal, and Bangladesh might achieve this target by 2030, others like Sudan and Angola face delays until 2041-2050. It is noteworthy that more than four-fifths of under-five deaths are concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia, highlighting the need for intensified global health efforts.
