A new study has revealed a concerning prevalence of metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) among participants in the Phenome India-CSIR Health Cohort, with 40% potentially affected. Published in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia, the research incorporated over 7,700 adults from 27 cities, highlighting significant geographic and demographic variations.

The study indicates that significant liver fibrosis, defined by liver stiffness, is more frequent in those with MASLD. The Phenome India project, a long-term initiative, aims to develop better predictive models for cardio-metabolic diseases such as diabetes and liver issues. The findings point to an urgent need for public health interventions targeting diverse socio-cultural settings in India.

Geographical data showed varying age-adjusted MASLD prevalence, from 27% in Thiruvananthapuram to nearly 50% in Roorkee and Bhopal. Obesity is identified as the chief risk factor, with diabetes and elevated blood pressure further heightening MASLD risk. The study emphasized the need for community awareness and innovative solutions to address this pressing health challenge.
