WHO's Lifeline: Evacuation Amidst Gaza Crisis
The World Health Organization is leading efforts to evacuate critically ill patients from Gaza amidst dire conditions. Over 15,000 patients, including children, await transfers as border closures hinder progress. The conflict has severely strained the enclave's health system, leading to numerous casualties.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is orchestrating a crucial medical evacuation from Gaza, involving 41 critical patients along with 145 companions. This effort comes amidst the ongoing blockade and conflict between Israel and Hamas.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus disclosed that approximately 15,000 patients, including many children, remain on the waiting list for evacuation due to the region's overwhelmed healthcare system. Despite the urgent need, the closure of the Rafah border crossing significantly hampers these necessary medical evacuations.
Over the years of conflict, Egypt has managed to facilitate the transfer of over 7,000 patients. Meanwhile, stringent security measures by Israeli authorities have further delayed transfers. As WHO continues to advocate for international aid, the humanitarian plight remains critical.
