EU Unveils Fertiliser Action Plan Amid Global Market Shifts
The European Commission is set to present a fertiliser action plan aimed at accelerating decarbonisation and addressing affordability issues exacerbated by the Iran war's impact on the market. The plan seeks to boost domestic production, diversify supply chains, and introduce long-term measures for sustainable fertiliser use within the EU.
The European Commission will unveil a comprehensive fertiliser action plan on May 19, according to the Commission's agenda released on Wednesday. This initiative targets decarbonisation and affordability challenges intensified by the Iran conflict's effects on a constrained market.
The plan will focus on rectifying structural vulnerabilities, promoting domestic fertiliser production, and diversifying supply chains, supported by potential regulatory changes. Measures to cushion the effects of the Iran war on the EU's energy markets were also announced.
Despite the soaring global fertiliser prices due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, EU farmers have not yet faced shortages, having secured their 2026 planting season needs early. The plan includes long-term strategies to bolster EU autonomy and foster sustainable, low-fossil fertiliser alternatives.
