Facua, a Spanish consumer rights entity, has called for an investigation into Volotea's latest pricing model which connects ticket rates to fluctuating fuel costs. This scheme could potentially impose a post-purchase surcharge reaching 14 euros, stirring controversy over consumer protection laws.
The group's appeal to Spain's Consumer Affairs Ministry alleges the practice may violate rules prohibiting price alterations on bought tickets. A Ministry spokesperson confirmed receiving the complaint, signaling an impending review. The European Consumer Organisation corroborates Facua's stance, highlighting EU requirements for upfront transparency in ticket pricing.
Volotea maintains that the policy applies only to bookings post-March 16. The airline asserts compliance with consumer legislation, citing upfront disclosure and automatic adjustments derived from external fuel price benchmarks, rather than internal discretion. These adjustments, part of its Fair Travel Promise, are enacted according to current fuel indices announced prior to departures.
