In light of the current blockade at the Strait of Hormuz, India has made a compelling call for the free transit of merchant vessels. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized on Wednesday that attacks on shipping routes are 'completely unacceptable.' Speaking at a Japan-hosted meeting focused on energy disruptions, Jaishankar highlighted the need for energy markets to remain open for global growth.
The Asia Zero-Emission Community plus meeting, chaired by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, saw the introduction of a new initiative, Partnership On Wide Energy and Resources Resilience (POWERR) Asia. This initiative aims to support Asian countries facing fuel shortages with USD 10 billion in financial aid, strengthening energy systems and promoting diversity in energy sources.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in discussions with US President Donald Trump, reiterated the importance of maintaining the Strait of Hormuz as open, safe, and secure for transit. The initiative comes amid heightened global concerns due to a US naval blockade, with Iran partially restricting shipping traffic in the Strait, affecting global oil and gas prices.
