In a devastating incident, a suspected boiler explosion at a Vedanta Ltd power plant in Singhitarai, Chhattisgarh, resulted in at least 17 deaths and wounded 36 others, a government official reported. The explosion prompted the suspension of operations at the 600-megawatt coal facility.

The tragic event unfolded approximately 230 kilometers from Raipur, the state capital. As India braces for an intense summer, the government has postponed maintenance on nearly 10 gigawatts of coal plant capacity due to gas supply disruptions owing to unrest in the Middle East.

According to District Superintendent of Police PK Thakur, the explosion is suspected to have been caused by overheating in the boiler tube. Vedanta, which acquired the plant through bankruptcy in 2022, confirmed the occurrence of the 'unfortunate incident' and stated that a comprehensive investigation is in process.
