The Election Commission has issued a stern directive to administrative and police officials in Puducherry, urging them to ensure the upcoming Assembly elections are conducted freely, fairly, and without fear. Scheduled for April 9, 2026, the elections demand strict impartiality from all officers, who are viewed as deputed to the Election Commission of India.
According to the latest data from Puducherry's Chief Electoral Officer, the final electoral roll for the 2026 polls lists 9,48,977 electors. Notably, women voters make up a majority with 5,03,076, compared to 4,45,761 men, alongside 140 voters identifying as third-gender. The 30-member Legislative Assembly's current term concludes on June 15.
Reflecting on previous election outcomes, in 2021 AINRC led with ten seats, while DMK and both BJP and Congress captured six each, amid an 84.8 percent voter turnout. Comparatively, in 2016, Congress dominated with 15 seats against a backdrop of 83.6 percent turnout. As election day nears, campaigns intensify, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticizing opposition for lacking development vision and alleging misuse of Puducherry as a political tool.
