Shadow Fleet's Grand Escape: The Enigma of Flora 1
The Swedish Coast Guard released the oil tanker 'Flora 1,' suspected to be part of a Russian shadow fleet linked to a 12 km oil spill off Gotland. While the spill won't reach shore, investigations into possible environmental crimes are ongoing. The tanker remains under scrutiny due to EU sanctions.
On Friday, the Swedish Coast Guard announced the release of the oil tanker 'Flora 1,' suspected of being part of a Russian shadow fleet causing a 12 km oil spill near Gotland.
According to the Coast Guard, the 'Flora 1' embarked from Primorsk without a clear destination before being seized. European nations, including Sweden, have ramped up efforts to thwart such fleets used to fund the ongoing conflict in Ukraine — a move criticized by Russia.
Swedish authorities are investigating potential environmental crimes connected with the spill. Although the spill is unlikely to reach shore, concerns over the security and environmental ramifications of shadow fleets persist, as underscored by Sweden's Minister for Civil Defence.
