The government of Maharashtra is initiating plans to develop a state-specific egg brand, aiming to bolster local poultry farming and decrease reliance on imports. This move involves providing subsidies to farmers to incentivize local egg production, according to officials.
Pankaja Munde, the Animal Husbandry Minister, emphasized the importance of creating a Maharashtra egg brand akin to successful milk brands such as Aarey and Mahanand. This initiative is part of the Mukhyamantri Gramin Pashudhan Udyojakata Yojana, which seeks to integrate agriculture with allied activities to foster rural entrepreneurship.
The state's daily demand for eggs is approximately 3 crore, but it currently produces only half that amount, necessitating imports from southern states. By increasing local production, the initiative could significantly enhance the incomes of farmers and poultry entrepreneurs, particularly in rural regions.
