Middle East Tensions Ripple Through European Markets
Europe's main stock index dropped significantly due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, triggered by the possibility of further U.S. strikes on Iran. The STOXX 600 index sank as technology and mining stocks led declines. Rising oil prices have increased impact on airline stocks amid geopolitical anxieties.
Europe's principal stock index experienced a notable drop exceeding 1% on Thursday, driven by renewed concerns over the Middle East conflict. These fears were reignited after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for further strikes on Iran.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index recorded a 1.2% decline, reaching 589.99 points by 0725 GMT. Technology stocks were hit hard, falling nearly 3%, while the mining sector saw a 2.7% decline due to falling precious metal prices.
Investor sentiment weakened as Trump declared, 'we're going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks.' Consequently, Brent crude prices soared past $100 a barrel, boosting energy stocks, the only major sector gaining traction.
As a result, European airline stocks such as Air France and Lufthansa suffered declines over 3.7% amidst the rising oil prices. Previously, the STOXX 600 had climbed over 2% following a more conciliatory message from Trump regarding U.S.-Iran hostilities.
The ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for European imports, continues to pressure equity markets, exacerbating fears of inflation and stagnant growth. Interest rates are projected to rise, with futures indicating at least three hikes this year, as reported by LSEG.
The markets are set to close in observance of Good Friday and Easter Monday.
