India's Coal Gasification Projects: A Boost for Energy Independence

The Coal and Mines Minister, G Kishan Reddy, has unveiled plans for seven coal gasification projects across Maharashtra, Odisha, and West Bengal. These initiatives, involving an investment of Rs 64,000 crore, are aimed at reducing India's dependence on energy imports.

During the Rajya Sabha session, the minister emphasized the Modi government's reforms over the past twelve years in India's coal sector. He assured the house of no power shortages and highlighted the increasing efficiency in coal block allocations through transparent auctions.

With India being the second largest coal producer and consumer globally, Reddy highlighted the country's fifth largest coal reserves. The coal gasification projects are expected to not only cut import reliance but also boost employment and save foreign exchange by converting coal into syngas and other valuable derivatives.
