European Union leaders have presented a financial olive branch to Ukraine, proposing funds to mend a pipeline crucial for oil deliveries to Hungary. The offer seeks to resolve tensions with Budapest over its veto on a significant financial aid package intended for Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia.
The dispute originates from the suspension of Russian oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline, allegedly due to Russian drone strikes. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused Ukraine of intentionally blocking oil, a claim Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy steadfastly denies.
The EU hopes that its offer of technical support and assistance will pave the path for restoring pipeline operations and potentially removing Hungary's block on imposed EU sanctions against Russia, as well as a critical loan to Ukraine. Awareness of the pressing financial needs of Ukraine underlines Zelenskyy's focus on securing necessary funds to aid his nation.
