RBI's Strategic Liquidity Injection Amid Tax-Induced Tightening
The Reserve Bank of India injected Rs 48,014 crore into the banking system through a seven-day variable rate repo auction. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday executed a strategic move by injecting Rs 48,014 crore into the banking system through a seven-day variable rate repo (VRR) auction. This action occurred despite the sharp drop in surplus liquidity due to advance tax payments.
The funds were infused at a cut-off and weighted average rate of 5.26 percent. The actual liquidity injection was significantly lower than the intended Rs 1.50 lakh crore, indicating severe constraints on surplus liquidity.
Further tightening is anticipated with upcoming goods and services tax (GST) outflows. The current surplus liquidity stands at Rs 75,483.63 crore, down from Rs 2.08 lakh crore pre-advance tax payments. The RBI continues to manage liquidity with measures like open market purchases of government securities.
