In a pivotal conversation on Monday, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin tackled pressing issues including the war in Iran and the prospects for peace in Ukraine. Hours earlier, Putin had underscored a looming global energy crisis threatening the world economy.

The energy crisis was triggered by a US-Israeli attack on Iran, which spurred a significant increase in oil prices not seen since the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war. This crisis has been exacerbated by reduced output from Gulf producers following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, an essential oil transit channel.

The conversation also opened the door for possible easing of US oil sanctions against Russia. This move is aimed at stabilizing global oil supplies but could complicate efforts to restrict Russian financial gains amid its Ukrainian conflict. Discussions also touched on encouraging a negotiated resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
