On Sunday, CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby leveled criticism at the Congress party for unveiling new welfare initiatives in Kerala, arguing that many of these benefits, such as pension schemes for marginalized communities, were originally implemented by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in previous governments.
In his remarks to ANI, Baby stated, 'During election periods, Congress makes numerous promises to the populace, but the people of Kerala recall the realities. The pension scheme for marginalized segments of society was initially rolled out by the LDF in phases, beginning under EK Nayanar's tenure as Chief Minister.'
Just one day before, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi outlined five major welfare guarantees aimed at enhancing social security and empowerment for women and youth. These proposals include enhanced healthcare access, financial security enhancements, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Among the initiatives is a 'women's empowerment package,' offering free bus travel for women on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation services. Additionally, female college students will receive a monthly stipend to alleviate educational financial burdens.
Social welfare pensions for vulnerable groups will be increased, and the Oommen Chandy Health Insurance Scheme promises comprehensive medical coverage for families. Youth will benefit from interest-free loans for business ventures.
A dedicated department will focus on elderly welfare, dignity, and protection. Congress leaders assert these measures will provide financial relief, empower citizens, and strengthen Kerala's social security. The announcements come as Kerala prepares for its Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for April 2026, where 140 members will be elected.
