In a move to support the farming community, the Indian government has announced an increase in subsidies for phosphorous and sulphur fertilisers during the 2025-26 rabi season. The decision, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Cabinet, significantly raises the subsidy allocation to Rs 37,952 crore.

The subsidy rates for nitrogen and potash will remain unchanged. Specifically, the subsidy for phosphate rises from Rs 43.60 to Rs 47.96 per kg, and sulphur from Rs 1.77 to Rs 2.87 per kg. This marks an increase in the overall subsidy from the previous rabi season by approximately Rs 14,000 crore.

Under the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Scheme, subsidies are allocated based on the nutrient content of non-urea fertilisers, including DAP and TSP. This scheme aims to ensure farmers can access essential fertilisers without increased retail prices, during the critical rabi sowing period.
