Indian Army Revamps Combat Strategy with Drones and Elite Units
The Indian Army is modernizing its infantry with drone platoons and elite commando units for improved combat capabilities. New-age carbines and advanced anti-tank missiles are being procured, while infantry weapons are upgraded. The Bhairav battalions are being developed to bridge regular and special forces.

Three hundred eighty infantry battalions of the Indian Army have been equipped with drone platoons and are receiving elite commando units as part of a modernization drive aimed at enhancing their combat capabilities along the northern and western borders.
Lt Gen Ajay Kumar, director general of infantry, highlighted steps to improve the strike efficiency of these units, revealing that the army is procuring 4.25 lakh battle carbines, costing Rs 2,770 crore. Each infantry battalion now has an Ashney drone platoon comprising surveillance and armed drones.
The Army has established five elite Bhairav battalions and plans to expand to 25 within six months. These units, along with advanced weaponry and surveillance technology, represent a significant step in the transformation of India's military capabilities.
