Three hundred eighty infantry battalions of the Indian Army have been equipped with drone platoons and are receiving elite commando units as part of a modernization drive aimed at enhancing their combat capabilities along the northern and western borders.

Lt Gen Ajay Kumar, director general of infantry, highlighted steps to improve the strike efficiency of these units, revealing that the army is procuring 4.25 lakh battle carbines, costing Rs 2,770 crore. Each infantry battalion now has an Ashney drone platoon comprising surveillance and armed drones.

The Army has established five elite Bhairav battalions and plans to expand to 25 within six months. These units, along with advanced weaponry and surveillance technology, represent a significant step in the transformation of India's military capabilities.
