Renowned U.S. director, actor, screenwriter, and producer Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to lead the main competition jury at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Announced by the festival organizers on Thursday, Gyllenhaal brings with her over three decades of acting experience.
Her career includes notable performances in films like the 2008 superhero blockbuster "The Dark Knight" and the 2009 drama "Crazy Heart," the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Gyllenhaal later ventured into directing with her 2021 drama "The Lost Daughter," which not only marked her directorial debut but also won her Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival of that year.
“I am thrilled to accept the invitation to lead this year’s Venice Film Festival jury,” Gyllenhaal expressed in a statement, highlighting Venice's support for authentic voices in cinema. Festival director Alberto Barbera commended Gyllenhaal's intelligence and courage, noting her presidency provides an authoritative voice dedicated to the core of the Festival—arthouse cinema.
