The Meghalaya government, facing pressure from local stakeholders, has decided to exclude Lumpongdeng Island from the proposed luxury resort project at Umiam Lake. Cabinet Minister Wailadmiki Shylla announced the decision following a meeting with community leaders.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and other officials agreed to preserve the island, addressing concerns about construction on the scenic locale. The tourism project will now focus on the Umiam Lake Resort property, ensuring no construction takes place on the island.
The government aims to generate employment for local youth by collaborating with the Taj group. Despite criticisms, officials maintain that their actions reflect public aspirations, not pressure. A formal amendment to the concession agreement will follow to ensure Lumpongdeng Island's exclusion from the project.
