Kanye Controversy: FC Basel Cancels Ye Concert
Swiss football club FC Basel has canceled a Kanye West concert amid controversy around his past antisemitic remarks. The club, responsible for events at St. Jakob-Park, stated they cannot host the artist in alignment with their values. This cancellation follows similar actions by other European venues.
Swiss football club FC Basel announced on Saturday that they have called off a Kanye West concert, making them the latest European venue to halt performances by the U.S. rapper amidst backlash over his past antisemitic comments.
FC Basel, in charge of managing concerts and events at their St. Jakob-Park stadium, informed Reuters that after carefully considering a request for West to perform, they opted against proceeding. An FCB spokesperson explained, "FCB received an enquiry and considered it. However, after a thorough review, we have decided not to proceed with the project, as we cannot, in accordance with our values, provide a platform for the artist in question within this context."
Reportedly, the concert was initially scheduled for June. The cancellation by FC Basel follows a similar decision by a Polish stadium on Friday and the postponement of a show in France. Earlier this month, the UK also barred the 48-year-old musician, now known as Ye, from traveling for a festival headliner slot. West had apologized in January, attributing his controversial behavior to untreated bipolar disorder and disavowed his previous Nazi admiration.
